The Arno river and Florence
| The river is welcomed amid the walls and the houses in that it is a river, a beneficial and treacherous force, which admits no frailty... it is captured by the embankments and flows towards the heart of the city, enclosed its stone trench... And yet, it is not humiliated, on the contrary, it is exalted by the wary and edgy attitude taken by the town, which respects it, acknowledging its dignified nature. The town may be distrustful, and the river may suffer because of the bonds and limits it has been subjected to, but in normal times all is resolved in the severe sublimation of that relationship, which is none other than the elementary relationship between stone and water. The two basic elements of Florence oppose each other, but also combine between the banks and under the bridges of the Arno. That mirror also reflects its own frame. The part of town overhanging the river shines and becomes undone in those vibrant ripples, it is equalised by the flow and dissolves... The town, the signs, the coats of arms of its history, are they but a wound that water, and thus nature, heals? |
