There are villages whose colours harmonise with the landscape.
When there is fog down in the valley, to those who arrive from the access roads San Gimignano, still kilometres away, appears suddenly behind a bend. With its clear-cut monochrome lines, it seems suspended on grey ripples.
The colour of the stone makes one sense its solid roots that dig into ancient history. The hillocks of the commune form a sort of black, background curtain and, when they become capped with clouds, the village sharply stands out against them.
Sometimes at dawn, the towers light up, taking on a deep pink hue that finally subdues as the twilight fades. Stone absorbs all light, enhancing its modulation and intensity (...) |
